I edit manucripts in the following genres:
- narrative nonfiction
- short story or essay collections
- young adult
I also edit individual short stories and essays or nonfiction proposals.
I DO NOT edit high fantasy, hard sci-fi, children's books, poetry, or screenplays.
I offer developmental or line edits. Please email me for prices at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What is a developmental edit and how do you know if you need one?
Developmental edits deal with the larger picture, My comments could address character development, plausibility, or the story's pace, for example. I will give the manuscript a thorough read and you will receive a detailed editorial letter with my comments, queries, and suggestions for changes. If there are certain things in particular you want me to look out for, you can let me know beforehand.
You may want this kind of edit if:
-you feel you need honest feedback on your story and you're not finding this from family and friends
-you feel you've done all you can with your manuscript but you think it may be missing something, may need to be structured differently, etc. You need a fresh eye or some direction.
-you want to know how your work comes across to someone who has worked as an acquisitions editor at a major publishing house
What are line edits?
In addition to an editorial letter, you will receive your manuscript back with corrections, comments, and queries on the pages. I use Track Changes in Word. If you would rather have a hard copy of your manuscript edited, that can be arranged.
You should request this kind of edit if:
-you want feedback on a line-by-line basis
-you want to polish your manuscript but don't wish to make any major changes at this point
